Description
The Dane County Department of Human Services provides either directly or through purchase-of-service agencies an
array of programs to help consumers meet their basic needs for food, shelter, jobs, and childcare services that
enable them to work toward economic self-sufficiency.

Childcare
Wisconsin Shares Child Care Subsidy
Program - Wisconsin Shares assists low-income families to pay for child care services. Parents can
choose among licensed child care centers, licensed family day care homes, and more informal child care settings,
so long as they meet basic health and safety standards. Most parents are required to share the cost of
childcare through a co-pay requirement. The co-pay amount is on a sliding scale based on family size and income
and the type of child care setting selected. More information on Wisconsin Shares may be obtained from the State web site.

Food
FoodShare Wisconsin
- FoodShare Wisconsin is a food and nutrition program designed to help create a healthier Wisconsin. It
is based on a modern version of the old federal food stamp program. The FoodShare benefit amount is based on
the number of persons in the household and the total monthly net household income. Persons are issued a debit
card, called the QUEST card, that enables them to buy eligible groceries at stores taking part in FoodShare
Wisconsin. More information on FoodShare Wisconsin is available on the State web site.

Senior Nutrition Program - The Area Agency on Aging of Dane County
purchases congregate and home delivered meal programs for adults age 60 and older in accordance with the Older
Americans Act and the Wisconsin Elderly Nutrition Program Manual of Policies and Procedures. Congregate meals
are provided at 31 sites throughout Dane County - advance reservations are required. Home delivered meals are
available to frail, homebound Dane County adults age 60 and older who have no other source for their noon meal
and who meet additional requirements. The goals are to provide nutritious congregate meals coupled with
socialization and educational or entertainment oriented programming to older adults who make reservations for
site-based meals and to provide nutritious, home-delivered meals to homebound older adults so that they can
remain in their own homes and communities.

Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)
Nutrition Program - is a federal program that provides vouchers for supplemental food and nutrition
information for eligible pregnant women, breastfeeding women, postpartum women, infants, children under the age
of 5, and fathers or foster parents of eligible infants and children.

Housing/Energy Assistance
Dane County Emergency Shelter Network - The Dane County Department of
Human Services is a partner in the Dane County Emergency Shelter Network that provides short-term emergency
shelter for homeless families and individuals. Families with children receive up to 30 days of emergency
shelter and food vouchers through an array of service providers with possible merit-based extensions for up to
90 days in a life-time. Families may also receive assistance with case management, apartment search,
counseling, and funds for security deposits. Childless adults are eligible for the overnight "overflow" shelter
only. Requests for shelter are coordinated through the Salvation Army.

Emergency Assistance Grants - This is a grant program for families facing
eviction/foreclosure or who are homeless and moving into a new place. Persons in need of service should contact
their assigned worker at Dane County Department of Human Services, call the Connections Phone Line at 242-7441,
or appear at the Dane County Job Center, 1819 Aberg Avenue, Madison to complete an application.
Energy Services, Inc. - The Dane County Department of Human Services
passes-through State/federal funding for the Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program (WHEAP) to Energy
Services, Inc. Low-income households eligible for WHEAP receive a one-time energy assistance grant. Special
needs cases also receive furnace, emergency and crisis energy assistance grants/services. The agency also
addresses the long-term energy needs of high-risk households by providing budget counseling, arranging for
deferred payments and referring its clients to low-income weatherization programs and to other agencies that
will assist them in meeting basic needs and promoting efforts for their long-term self-sufficiency. The agency
is located at 1225 S Park ST, Madison.

Jobs
Dane County Job Center - The Dane
County Department of Human Services is a partner agency with the Dane County Job Center. The Dane County Job
Center housed at 1819 Aberg Avenue, Madison assists job seekers to get the career planning, job placement, and
training services they need to get jobs. The Dane County Job Center resource room includes computers for
JobNet, Internet computer access, State government job listings, and resume writing computers. An on-site Day
Care Center provides care while parents are completing appointments or training at the Job Center.
Wisconsin JobNet Job
Search - this is an on-line system for searching for current employment opportunities that employers
have listed with the Wisconsin Job Service.
Wisconsin Works (W-2)
- The goal of Wisconsin Works is to provide necessary and appropriate services to prepare individuals to
work, and to obtain and maintain viable, self-sustaining employment, which will promote economic growth.
Services include job readiness motivation, job retention and advancement skill training, as well as, childcare.

Other Financial Assistance
Burial Assistance - This program provides limited coverage of burial
costs for individuals who are receiving Title 19 Medical Assistance, for those receiving Interim Assistance, or
for those whose families are unable to cover burial costs.
To apply: The family or funeral home may call the Dane County Department of Human Services at (608) 242-7441
for an assistance in filing an application.
Interim Assistance Program - This program provides benefits valued at a
maximum of $247 per month to persons who are not able to work and assists them to qualify for federal disability
programs. Recipients may also receive pharmacy coverage and FoodShare Wisconsin benefits.

Refugee Cash and Medical Assistance Program - This program provides
welfare and medical assistance to financially needy, recently arrived refugees and asylees who are not eligible
for other programs.
